NSG Celebrates National Physical Therapy Month

National Physical Therapy Month is celebrated every October by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) to recognize and increase awareness of the important role that physical therapists play in restoring and improving motion and the overall quality of life. Therapy treatment helps keep people healthy, fit, and active and can assist in avoiding surgery and long-term use of prescription medications.

NSG celebrates each October by recognizing the top-performing network therapy clinics from across the country through the NSG Provider Excellence Awards.  NSG also plans a variety of physical and educational activities for its associates to help promote a healthy lifestyle.

National Physical Therapy Month began in 1981 as National Physical Therapy Week and was celebrated in June.  The following year, the celebration was extended to an entire month and was moved to October.  National Physical Therapy Month has grown in popularity over the years and is now a recognized celebration in the National Health Observances Calendar.

Each year, the APTA highlights a different aspect of the physical therapy practice while keeping the recurring “Move Forward” theme in place.  This year’s celebration highlights sports injury prevention. Whether your child is playing Little League or you participate in a pick-up basketball game, playing sports helps to promote a physically active lifestyle.  Physical activity assists with weight management, cardiovascular endurance, and increased self-esteem.  However, the potential for a sports-related injury exists.  This year’s theme helps to educate those occasional athletes and weekend warriors on how to best prevent injuries from occurring.

Mobility is the key ingredient to aging successfully and remaining active and independent throughout your life.  As you make the important decisions about health care for you, your family, and your employees, it is important to remember that one size does not fit all.  A physical therapist should use their education and clinical expertise to develop an individualized treatment approach for each and every patient. When you are in the hands of a physical therapist, you should have a plan of care that is safe, appropriate, and addresses your individual needs.
